Crown seeking life sentence for Calgary pair found guilty in quadruple killing

CALGARY – Crown prosecutors are asking for a life sentence for a woman and man found guilty in a 2017 quadruple killing that stemmed from a kidnap-for-ransom plot.

Yu Chieh Liao, who also goes by the first name Diana, and Tewodros Kebede were convicted in December of first-degree murder in the death of Hanock Afowerk.

Liao was also found guilty of being an accessory after the murders of Cody Pfeiffer, Glynnis Fox, and Tiffany Ear, whose remains were found in Afowerk’s burned-out car.

Kebede was convicted of being an accessory after Pfeiffer’s murder.

During the hearing, prosecutors said Liao and Kebede acted cruelly and prevented the actual murderers of Pfeiffer, Fox and Ear from being punished.

The crown also asked for six to seven years for Kebede’s accessory charge, up to eight years for each accessory charge for Liao.

The father of Cody Pfeiffer was also in court saying his head was spinning and his heart hit the floor when homicide detectives told him what happened.

He added there’s a hole in his heart that can never be filled. Cody’s death has taken a severe toll on his life.

The sentencing arguments continue Thursday afternoon.
