Canada Winter Games torch relay comes to Calgary

CALGARY (660 NEWS)- The 2019 Canada Winter Games torch relay is stopping in Calgary as it makes its way through central Alberta before wrapping up in Red Deer on Feb. 15 to open the 14th edition of the youth multi-sport event.

CEO of the games, Scott Robinson says the torch relay in Calgary will begin at 11:30 a.m.

“We’re going to be running through Stephen Avenue Mall,” he said. “It’s probably going to be the best location for people to grab a view of the torch relay, and it’ll culminate at the Central Library downtown.”

In total, 48 communities will be visited through the MNP Canada Games Torch Relay, with 26 torch stops and 22 celebration stops being hosted across Canada.

Around 3,600 young athletes, managers and coaches are expected to descend on Red Deer between Feb. 15 and Mar. 2. The games will feature a range of 19 sports with 150 different events, and a major arts and culture festival.

“Many of Canada’s Olympians have come through a Canada Games, names like Hayley Wickenheiser, Jennifer Heil, Andre DeGrasse, Steve Nash, and Sidney Crosby,” he added.

The games are expected to draw over 20,000 visitors over the two weeks. To find more information about the games you can visit the website.
