Province continues to receive feedback on Bighorn Country plan

CALGARY (660 NEWS) – Environment Minister Shannon Phillips was on the hot seat Tuesday night over the province’s plans for Bighorn Country during a telephone town hall.

The Minister was speaking to residents in the Sundre and Drayton Valley areas after cancelling an in-person town hall meeting over alleged harassing phone calls.

She had claimed an RCMP investigation was underway when there was not. She has since clarified her statement.

Phillips says the province is moving forward with plans for the parcel of land on the east side of Alberta’s mountain parks because Albertans love to spend time there, and the government wants to help the public do that.

“But I also want to make sure that; that nature is there for our friends and our families and us to enjoy, for generations to come,” she said. “We can not do that, by simply turning our backs on it and hoping for the best.

Another telephone town hall is scheduled for Wednesday evening in Red Deer.

The province is proposing restrictions to motorized activity in the environmentally sensitive section of the Rocky Mountains.
